Ella Louise Lewis, 66, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully at her home on April 25, 2024 at 6:21 pm. She had been courageously battling some ongoing health issues. She was born in Olive Branch, Mississippi on June 1, 1957 to the late Reverend Roosevelt and Eliza Mae (King) Baker, Sr., and later married Ernest Eugene Lewis in Elkhart on February 3, 1975. He passed away in 2019. Along with her parents and her beloved Ernest, Ella is also preceded in death by her sons Maurice and Irvin C. Lewis and her brother, Roosevelt Baker, Jr.
Ella is survived by her son Simeon (Mari) Lewis of Elkhart; her brother Timothy S. (Linda M.) Baker, Sr. of Evansville; sisters Mary L. Knox and Dorothy A. (Shelby) Morris, Sr. of Terre Haute and Martha J. House of Elkhart, and her beautiful grandbabies Simone S. and Vashti A. Lewis. Ella is also survived by a loving host of extended family, neighbors and friends, including aunts Lorene Cole of North Memphis, Tennessee, Betty and Richard Newson of South Haven, Mississippi, Cora (Turby) Taylor of Olive Branch, Mertis Morris of Battle Creek, Michigan and Pearl Fidel of Oklahoma City and uncle Louis Sanders of Olive Branch.
In accordance with Ella’s wishes, cremation has taken place. However, a celebration of Ella’s life will take place at the AGAPE Missionary Baptist Church, 248 West Wolf Avenue, Elkhart on Friday, May 10, 2024 at 10:00 am with visitation beginning at 9:30am. The Reverend Kevin Adams will officiate the service, then burial of Ella’s cremated remains will take place at Prairie Street Cemetery in Elkhart immediately following the services at 1:00 pm. The repast will then follow the burial at Prayer House Church Of God In Christ, 1114 Cone Street, Elkhart (across from Billings Funeral Home).
Ella spent most of her days working in the RV industry, but her real love (and mission) was ministering to others. Because her dad was a minister, Ella obviously grew up in the church; but no one could ever predict the amount of grace and compassion that Ella absorbed throughout her years serving her Lord. She absolutely loved to volunteer her time with all types of charitable organizations and was always the first to volunteer at area churches to help with serving food. Every waking moment was spent in concern of others, and Ella especially channeled the power of her Lord through prayer. She loved to pray for people, and we can only imagine that her list was always constantly growing.
Ella was also a beautiful and talented singer, loved to do jigsaw puzzles and loved to write letters and send out greeting cards. She was compassionate about her faith and always knew God would find a way.
Memorial donations and floral tributes may be given to the family in care of 1620 West Franklin Street, Elkhart.
